World Languages Department Mission Statement
The World Languages Department at Incarnate Word Academy is dedicated to helping students to communicate in French, Spanish or Chinese The program cultivates an awareness and appreciation of the diversity of social and cultural values both in the US and in other countries. In an increasingly global society and ever more diverse American culture, it becomes the responsibility of the World Languages Department to give students the linguistic and cultural tools which will prepare them for their place in a far more interrelated world.
Developing these skills expands their critical understanding and helps students make sound decisions about themselves as they relate to individuals, their community and the world. In the future, Women of the Word will be prepared to compete for career opportunities due to their additional linguistic abilities and expanded perspectives.
World Languages Department Goals
Teachers will assign an oral presentation which requires students to conduct research

and ideas to an audience of listeners or readers on a variety of topics.
Teachers will assign one cultural investigation per year (Spanish III, IV & V)
Cultural Investigations meet the Missouri Foreign Language Standard—Communities.
Standard 5.1 indicates that students use language both within and beyond the school setting;
Standard 5.2 indicates that students show evidence of becoming life-long learners by using
the language for personal enjoyment and enrichment.
